NYC Inspo For YouTubers

Here's your next channel and video ideas...

In today’s newsletter I am going to show you how the biggest YouTube channel inspiration could be sat right under your nose….

All we need to do, is take a trip.

💥 The City That Never Sleeps

The Lady Herself…

I landed back in the UK less than 24 hours ago. Fresh from 5 nights in the big apple.

Well, I say “fresh”, I am absolutely knackered! So much to see, do, eat and experience. If you have never been then I would highly recommend it if you get the chance.

Which is why I wanted to talk about the trip and what I believe could inspire your channel and video topics.

NYC is just a city. Yeah it’s one of the most famous, but it’s still a place on this planet. Much like the place you sit and read this message.

Here are some YouTube channel ideas that could be defined or inspired from your very location:

Tourist Guides:

I spent easily two month planning my trip. I wanted to be prepared for everything and organised with what I was to do whilst in NYC, including:

  • How to use the subway

  • How to get from JFK to Manhattan

  • How much to tip

  • What are the best observation decks

  • How to see the Statue Of Liberty

  • What US eSIM should I use with my phone

  • What are the best iOS apps for visiting NYC

  • Where are the whispering walls in Grand Central Station

  • What is the weather like in NYC

  • Where to find the best bagels in NYC

That’s probably 0.5% of my recent search history. I also dive into the Facebook groups and skim the relevant information in order to be equipped to take on the big apple.

Here’s where you come in. You can create this content for NYC or any town or city. Especially if it’s a tourist hotspot. I would even argue you don’t need to live there, as long as you can get there frequently to create content.

Here Be Barr has positioned himself as a NYC expert with almost 500k subscribers on YouTube. He creates content on everything including the good stuff i.e the food…

So think about what a tourist would need/want to know. Create content that answers that question.

Moving To The City:

A little twist on the typical tourist channel is those that create videos about life in the city.

Let’s face it, when you up sticks and relocate, the way you interact and position yourself in a city is very different to what a tourist will see. It’s more long term.

The thing with big cities especially, is that people are often moving there to live. It could be to pursue dreams, careers, relationships, studies or just the fun of it.

Your job is the same as before. Create content that helps these people. Show them your life and how you overcome challenges:

  • Affordable places to eat

  • How much is rent in Manhattan

  • Can I park in Manhattan

  • Best areas to live in NYC

  • Job vacancies in NYC

  • How to stay safe in the city

  • Best gym in NYC

  • Where to go running in NYC

Chelsea Callahan is one of the many vloggers who document their life as a resident of that fine city.

Chelsea has 104k subscribers on her YouTube channel and has built a loyal following to her personal brand.

Maybe there is somewhere you always dreamed of living and you can make this a project in its own right?

The Artist

I don’t know what category these guys and gals come under, but I am shouting them out anyway as they are by far some of my favourite creators.

The YouTube OG: Casey Neistat and the impressive upcomer, Colt Kirwan.

If you have never seen their work, close your laptop, go spend 3 days in a cupboard and binge watch as much as you can.

Both are incredibly talented storytellers and creatives. The content they create isn’t simple to reproduce and comes with time and serious levelling up of skills. But their location also plays a part (and could for you too).

This is particularly relevant in big cities like NYC.

They are abundant in inspiration and intrigue. New York is a great but unbelievable crazy place. It is an assault on the senses when you first arrive, just so much noise and action.

Random people screaming and shouting. Cars whizzing by. The streets stinking of Cannabis, sewers and the aroma of the halal food truck fighting back. It is a nuts place.

When these guys go outside and create content, they can develop characters and stories using the surroundings. Embracing the pace of the location and using that to develop videos my eyes must watch!

Go watch one of their videos and you will see what I mean.

Keeping It Real

On the flipside to all these creators are the new breed of YouTuber who want to show you the forbidden, scary and intriguing aspects of city life

There are a number of creators now who show you the real life of cities and towns. Some focus on one location, others move around. They often go into the places with bad reputations for gangs, violence, drugs and more.

Why?

Because people really want to see what goes on there and whether they make it out the other side. It’s interesting.

Tonnes of these creators have popped up over the last few years, but one of the biggest and most successful is Peter Santenello.

He creates videos that show real life. He wants to put you into someone else’s world so you can develop your understanding of the world around you.

That’s just a snippet of some of the videos and channel inspo you could have by focusing on a location.

You could niche down further:

  • Real estate in City X

  • Sports team in City X

  • Tourist attractions (i.e Disney) in City X

  • Raising a family in City X

I am sure you get the point by now!

Look around you, is your next video or channel idea right under your nose?

▶️ How Do I Create These Videos?

Ok so now you have the idea, but you don’t have the know how to start creating. I gotcha!
