Why You Should Start Your Own Educational YouTube Channel Today
It could be the greatest decision you ever make
YouTube // Medium // SkillShare // Facebook
In today’s newsletter:
☑️ Sharing Your Passion, Knowledge & Expertise
☑️ Get Started Today (Alongside Your Day Job)
The internet was initially invented for useless cat videos, people dancing poorly on TikTok, and conspiracy theories that make flat-earthers look like scholars. But beneath all that madness, there’s a growing corner of the web that’s actually helpful: educational content on YouTube.
So, why not add some value to the chaos and start your own YouTube channel? I promise, it’s more rewarding than binge-watching those “top 10 bizarre facts about potatoes” videos.
In fact, 86% of US viewers say that they use YouTube to learn new things. The ultimate source for educational content, brought to you by hobbyists, experts and knowledgeable folk in just about ANY niche.
Want to learn how to fix the buttons on your dryer (I did just yesterday!) - there are DIY enthusiasts and electrical appliance repairers teaching just that.
Want to learn how to create a home budget? Build a ship with matchsticks? Manage large scale projects? Speak Urdu? Brush up on your high school mathematics? Fly a plane? Knit a jumper? Produce a movie?
There are people everywhere sharing their knowledge and expertise via their own YouTube channels. Platforms that allow them to build an audience and monetise through sponsorship, ad revenue and digital products.
Ultimately, creating a business of their own and helping find self-fulfillment and purpose.
The questions is, why don’t you create an educational channel of your own?
Here’s why I believe you should consider starting your own educational channel with the humble help of a screen recording tool:
YouTube’s Obsession with Learning
YouTube isn’t just about meme compilations anymore. A whopping 86% of U.S. viewers say they use YouTube to learn new things. That means there’s a massive audience out there waiting to soak up your knowledge. Whether you’re an expert in calculus or know how to fold a fitted sheet (you’re a wizard if you do), someone wants to learn from you.
And let’s face it, if Khan Academy can go from one math geek to over 8.5 million subscribers and billions of views, there’s hope for the rest of us mere mortals.
Screen Recording: Your New Superpower
Surprisingly, all you need to start is a decent screen recording tool and a microphone. It’s like having a camera crew, studio, and a personal assistant… but cheaper and far less annoying. Screen recording allows you to create detailed tutorials, explain concepts step-by-step, and edit with ease. Whether you want to teach coding, give presentations, or even explain how to finally stop killing houseplants, it’s all possible with a few clicks.
Plus, unlike those fancy YouTubers with perfect lighting and annoying over-enthusiasm, you can keep it real. A screen recording lets you focus on what you’re teaching, not how much caffeine you’ve had before recording.
Personally I use Filmora as my main editor and Camtasia for screen recording (You can just use Filmora if you only want a single solution).
Low Effort, High Reward
We’re all busy people. You’ve got work, family, Netflix queues to get through. But starting an educational channel doesn’t have to take over your life. The beauty of screen recording is that you can whip up content in your spare time, with minimal setup. Want to break down algebra while still wearing your pyjamas? Go for it. No one will ever know.
And here’s the kicker: educational content keeps working while you sleep. You put in a few hours of effort, and it can continue to educate thousands of people over time. Not a bad ROI, if you ask me.
The World Needs Your Expertise
Think about it—every day, millions of people search YouTube for answers. Some of these people are just trying to figure out how to reset their Wi-Fi routers (seriously, help them), while others are hungry for deeper knowledge. Imagine being the one who saves someone’s academic year or helps them pass that impossible test. You don’t have to be a genius to share what you know—just be passionate and break things down simply.
Take Veritasium, a YouTube channel with over 16 million subscribers. It started with one guy talking about science—and now millions tune in to learn about physics and space without feeling like they’re back in their high school science class.
Monetize Your Genius
If you’re still not sold on the idea, here’s a little nudge: money. Yep, YouTube isn’t just a platform to share knowledge—it can also become a side hustle. Channels like Excel Campus by Jon Acampora earn big bucks through ads, sponsorship and digital products.
I was lucky enough to see a live session with Jon who explained how it all started a side hustle alongside his day job. He went deep on teaching people about Microsoft Excel of all things….the rest is history.
Often the best way to approach an educational channel is to really niche down into a core topic. Find something in demand and put your own twist on it.

So you are convinced that YouTube is the way to go. You may even have an idea what topic you would like to teach and establish yourself as the go-to person.
But… How the heck do you do it when you have a family to support, demanding job and non-stop studies?
